Cosmic Race Series- Grand Mesa Grind

The inaugural 2013 course was hugely popular with racers and organizers -  so last year we've increased the stakes a bit. We stuck to the same backcountry style and feel but added a boot pack climb up Sudden Death. As in years past, competitors climbed in the woods on skin tracks and winded through Powderhorn's picturesque boulder fields. Check out last year's course.

The "Race" category course is +/- 4,000 vertical ft. The course started in front of the Sunset Lodge, traversed west to ascend Bear Claw, descended Upper T-Bird/Hooker, ascended Hooligan/Mushroom Farm/Mud Slide, traversed and ascended above Sven’s Bend to the Patrol Hut, and descended Wonderbump/Cannonball to finish it up.

The "Rec" category course is +/- 2,000 vertical ft. From the top of the first climb at West End Chair, the course followed Tenderfoot trail to re-join the "Race" course at a skin track that climed above Sven’s Bend.

Click here for more info about Cosmic.

Mandatory gear: helmet, beacon, shovel, probe and pack. If you have “tech” bindings (Dynafit, Ski Trab, La Sportiva), skis 75mm or narrower and mixed or mohair skins you probably belong in the Race category. If you have a heavier set-up go for the Rec. category. Bike or climbing helmets are ok. (Yes, all of the event is in a controlled area but we require the mandatory gear as many of the other events in the COSMIC series are in and out of ski area boundaries; always requiring the same gear keeps it easy for competitors to know what’s needed).

MESA, Colo. (August 19, 2015) – Powderhorn Mountain Resort (PMR) is opening a downtown office, located in the Home Loan Building, at 205 N. 4th Street, in Grand Junction, on Tuesday, August 25, 2015.

The Powderhorn downtown office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday’s from 10 am to 3 pm. until PMR’s opening day of December 17, 2015.

“The downtown office will be a pass sales office. This has been a request for years, by our guests, to have a stationary location, in the town of Grand Junction. This will allow our guests to conveniently stop by and purchase their season passes, P-Cards, and gift cards for the upcoming season. We’re excited that our partnership with Home Loan has allowed for such a wonderful opportunity not just for us, but also our guests. The Home Loan Building is the perfect downtown location. The building has access to easy parking and is walking distance to everything in downtown,” said Powderhorn spokesperson Dusti Reimer.

The office will be directly inside the Home Loan State Bank Lobby. Powderhorn will also be at Summit Canyon Mountaineering from 5-8 pm during Farmer’s Market, starting on August 27, 2015.

For the full list of pass rates and PMR partners, please visit the PMR website at Season Passes can be purchased at the downtown Powderhorn office during office hours, PMR’s website or by calling (970) 268-5700 ext. 2100. Pass prices increase October 8, 2015.
