POWDERHORN MOUNTAIN RESORT ANNOUNCES OPENING DAY SUPERHERO CELEBRATION, IMPROVEMENTS AND CAPITAL PROJECTS FOR THE 2012-13 SEASON.

MESA, Colo. (Dec. 11, 2012) – Powderhorn Mountain Resort opens for the 2012-2013 season on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012. The resort kicks-off the ski and snowboard season with a Superhero Celebration weekend, December 15-16, 2012, including a pray for snow party, live music on the Sunset Deck compliments of Suds & Skis and Telemark Magazine.  Costume contest and live art will also be taking place throughout the day. Guests also will enjoy improvements in all areas of operations, with continued focus on the overall experience. The lifts will start turning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with powder and groomed conditions, thanks to recent snowfall throughout the area.

Opening day at Powderhorn, Saturday, Dec. 15, at 8:45 a.m., the resort hosts a champagne toast, first chair send-off and ribbon cutting to announce the start of a Superhero season and celebration. Throughout the day, skiers and riders can enjoy live music on the Sunset Deck, a superhero costume contest, and a festive market atmosphere with vendors and live art in the base area.

Adult lift tickets can be purchased for $50 from Saturday through Sunday, this week only. Skiers and riders holding the Powderhorn Mountain Resort “P-Card” (available for $69) ski free their first day and get a 20 percent discount on subsequent lift tickets for the remainder of the season. In keeping with tradition, Powderhorn Mountain Resort will donate a portion of the proceeds from opening weekend to two community organizations: Partners of Mesa County and Colorado Discover Ability foundation

“As a part of last season’s 45th anniversary celebration we started a new tradition at Powderhorn,” said Powderhorn General Manager Daren Cole. “Each season, we’ll support two charities that are ingrained in the community and throughout the valley. Partners and the CDA were a natural fit.”

Also for the 2012-2013 season, guests will find a wide range of improvements, including: three new trails (Sven’s Bend, Thunderbird Glade and Bronco); a new terrain park product for beginners called the EZ Park; new and improved features; and an additional lane for the tubing hill. In addition, the new West Bench BBQ will be open three times a week at the top of Lift One, weather permitting and the Trader Café, serving Farmer Brothers Coffee from their exclusive “Artesian Collection”.  The resort has also added a new disc golf course for summer recreation. In preparation for future needs, a water diversion pipe was installed over the summer season to increase water supply for snowmaking.

“We’ve concentrated our efforts on enhancements that will resonate with our guests,” said Sam Williams, Mountain Operations Manager at Powderhorn Mountain Resort. “The new Disc Golf Course and gladded runs are a great example. The disc golf course was a huge hit last summer and we have no doubt the new trails will offer a memorable winter adventure opportunity, thanks to the hard work of our crews.”

Powderhorn’s new gladed trails might not be new to an adventurous few, but now everyone can enjoy this unique experience. Most importantly, the trails can now be found on Powderhorn’s new trails maps. Sven’s Bend is a natural glade that lies between Upper Maverick and Tenderfoot. It consists of approximately 52 acres of aspen, fir, and boulder fields. Thunderbird Glade is an additional natural glade area that lies to the west of Snowcloud on the upper end and east of Hooker on the lower end. The upper end is a mixture of aspen, fir and boulder fields with the lower end consists mainly of SAD- infected aspen trees. Bronco carries the western theme of the majority of our trail names but also is the nickname of our former Ski Patrol Director Bill Bruchak, who retired at the end of last season. Bruchak is being inducted into the Grand Mesa Ski Hall of Fame this year at the annual Snowball, and the naming of this run is a tribute to his 30-plus years at Powderhorn.
