Here at Powderhorn, we realize that environmental responsibility starts with us. One of the great things about skiing and snowboarding is enjoying our environment. We strive to to provide mountain recreation for future generations of snowriders.
Average monthly recycling statistics: 400 lbs of cardboard; 20 lbs of cans and bottles; and 80 lbs of office paper, catalogs, and newspaper!
Here are some policies and practices we've put in place:
- Purchased wind energy credits to offest the power used to run 2 of our 3 lifts
- Reduced our impact on landfills by up to 40%. We recycle paper, aluminum, glass, plastics, cardboard (about 600 lbs/week), printer cartridges, oil, and some metals.
- Installed a used-oil burner in Fleet Maintenance to use less propane and use waste oils productively to eliminate sending them to third parties for disposal .
- Encourage guests to use the recycling bins located throughout the daylodge.
- Recycle uniforms by donating them to less developed nations.
- Participate in the Colorado Adopt-a-Highway program. Powderhorn employees clean 2 miles of Highway 65 twice a year.
- Used, unserviceable skis are donated to a company that recycles them by manufacturing furniture using them as construction materials.
- Replacing light bulbs as they expire with low-energy, high efficiency bulbs.
- Installed ceiling fans in the Sunset Grille to even out heating and cooling requirements without supplemental assistance.
- Check and replace water faucet gaskets.
