SKI GREEN AND GUILT FREE
Powderhorn Resort Announces They Are Going Green With The Purchase Of Renewable Energy Credits To Support Ski Area Operations.
Mesa,
CO, September 25, 2007: As concern continues to grow about the effects
of climate change, Powderhorn Resort located outside of Grand Junction,
Colorado, is taking action. The ski area will offset the energy
requirements of two of their three lifts with wind energy credits
purchased from Renewable Choice Energy of Boulder, Colorado.
A
Renewable Energy Credit (REC) purchase ensures that the amount of
electricity a company or an individual uses is replaced onto the power
grid with renewable electricity. Powderhorn will not actually be
powered by wind. Instead, the credits will help generate electricity
without producing carbon dioxide or other harmful pollutants and reduce
the amount of coal and natural gas used.

culture.’ More and more ski areas now realize that environmental

consumers about the benefits of wind power."
Powderhorn shows
that size doesn’t matter and follows the lead of Aspen Skiing Co. and
Vail Resorts who have spearheaded in Colorado renewable energy amid
concerns about climate change. Aspen Skiing officials repeatedly have
warned about the impact of global warming on the state's snowpack
levels and the long-term viability of the ski industry. Powderhorn is
the first of the smaller Colorado ski resorts to make the jump into
renewable energy.
In addition to renewable energy, Powderhorn
has adopted a resort-wide environmental plan. The plan includes
recycling plastics, aluminum, glass, skis, printer cartridges,
cardboard, oil, paper, uniforms, and some metals. The resort has
reduced its landfill impact nearly 40% by recycling alone. “By making
the ‘green commitment’, we hope our customers can ski or ride guilt
free today and many, many, more tomorrow’s.” said Allen.
