POWDERHORN RESORT TURNS 40!
Powderhorn Resort is proud to be celebrating its 40th Anniversary during the 2006-2007 ski season. The ski area opened in 1966 on the northern slopes of Grand Mesa- the world’s largest and highest flattop mountain with elevations up to 11,000 feet.
Skiing on the Grand Mesa began in the 1940s with a rope tow at a
location known as “Mesa Creek Ski Area,” just 2 miles south of the
resort. As the sport grew in the area, more acreage and facilities were
needed. Powderhorn Ski Resort was built in 1966 through the efforts of
people in Grand Junction. More than 300 individual shareholders
ultimately owned stock in the original Powderhorn Ski Corporation.
Under
current ownership, Powderhorn Resort has been expanded to 600 skiable
acres, with three lifts, lodging, restaurants, and real estate. The
resort has taken on a character of cheerfulness and exceptional guest
service since 1998 and continues to improve the “smile” quality of its
staff members and the quality of the product offered to the public.
Powderhorn
remains committed to the excitement and adventure of winter sports with
future plans of product expansion to further enhance the experience of
our guests.
Powderhorn will be hosting a Birthday Week January 8-14 at the resort
with a huge Birthday Party on Saturday, January 13. Guests may browse
the memorabilia of Powderhorn’s history as well as enjoy live music,
cake, giveaways, and a treasure hunt on the mountain. The staff of
Powderhorn would like to thank everyone for 40 years of memories!
